Musyawarah Arsip creates spaces where artists, researchers, historians, archivists, and others can come together to collaborate on archive-based artistic projects. Grounded in the principle of cross-disciplinary collaboration, this working model explores possible artistic strategies with archives and sharing them with the public—whether through programs organized by Musyawarah Arsip itself or in collaboration with exhibitions, festivals, and other platforms in Indonesia and beyond.
Sejarah, Memori, Peringatan
Sejak tahun 2019, Iswanto Hartono, Mirwan Andan dan Hans van Houwelingen menggarap proyek seni berupa film dokumenter mengenai kolonialisme dan kaitannya dengan sejarah, ingatan dan peringatan. Karya ini berkisar pandangan banyak orang dari berbagai generasi terhadap penjajahan di Indonesia dan hubungannya dengan monumen kolonial, baik yang dipertahankan keberadaannya maupun yang dihilangkan. Jakarta dan Aceh dipilih sebagai pintu masuk untuk memulai perjalanan proyek seni ini. Dua karya yang sudah jadi (Jakarta dan Aceh) telah diputar serta didiskusikan di Banda Aceh, Amsterdam, Rabat, dan Marrakesh). Kini, proyek seni ini telah merampungkan pengambilan gambar di Kalimantan Timur (Balikpapan, Samarinda) dan Sulawesi Selatan (Makassar, Barru, dan Pare-Pare) dan pada tahap pengeditan, serta akan diteruskan ke berbagai titik di Indonesia dan di Belanda sendiri. Pengerjaan karya ini dilakukan secara kolaboratif bersama peneliti dan pembuat film (terutama cameraman) setempat di masing-masing lokasi. Sejak akhir 2024, Musyawarah Arsip turut terlibat dalam mendukung proses riset dan produksi karya ini untuk lokasi Kalimantan Timur dan Sulawesi Selatan.
History, Memory, Commemoration
Since 2019, artists Iswanto Hartono, Mirwan Andan, and Hans van Houwelingen have been developing a documentary art project that examines colonialism and its ties to history, memory, and commemoration. The work reflects on how different generations in Indonesia and Netherland view the colonial past and its monuments—both those still standing and those that have disappeared. Jakarta and Aceh became the starting points of this artistic journey, resulting in two completed works that have been screened and discussed in Banda Aceh, Amsterdam, Rabat, and Marrakesh. The project has since expanded to East Kalimantan (Balikpapan, Samarinda) and South Sulawesi (Makassar, Barru, and Pare-Pare), where filming has been completed and is now in the editing stage. The journey will continue across other parts of Indonesia as well as in the Netherlands. Each stage of the project is carried out collaboratively with local researchers and filmmakers (especially cameramen) at the filming sites. Since late 2024, Musyawarah Arsip has been actively supporting the research and production process in East Kalimantan and South Sulawesi.
Alhamdulillah, Nama Kami GANEFO
Proyek seni ini adalah bagian pertama dari serial proyek seni Mirwan Andan dan Iswanto Hartono mengenai era Perang Dingin dan bagaimana Indonesia menyikapinya dengan fokus pada peristiwa GANEFO (Games of the New Emerging Forces) yang terjadi di Jakarta pada 1963. Proyek seni ini pada awalnya adalah undangan kepada Mirwan Andan dari Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst/Museum of Contemporary Art (M HKA), Antwerp, Belgia dengan kurator Nav Haq, untuk mengambil bagian dalam proyek pameran The Geopolitics of Infranstructure. Dalam perkembangannya, bersama seniman Iswanto Hartono, strategi produksi dan presentasi artistik proyek seni ini dirumuskan dan pengerjaan risetnya didukung oleh Musyawarah Arsip. Dengan sokongan dari sejumlah pekerja seni yang berbasis di Makassar, karya yang dihasilkan dalam proyek seni ini adalah 4 mural on canvas ukuran besar, 4 video pendek dan instalasi audio. Dalam pameran yang berlangsung di M HKA sejak 12 Juni – 21 September 2025, keseluruhan karya dipresentasikan dalam rupa instalasi dengan judul Alhamdulillah, Nama Kami GANEFO.
Alhamdulillah, Our Name is GANEFO
This project marks the first chapter in a larger artistic series by Mirwan Andan and Iswanto Hartono that explores the Cold War era and Indonesia’s responses to it, with a focus on the GANEFO (Games of the New Emerging Forces) held in Jakarta in 1963. The work began when Mirwan Andan was invited by Nav Haq, curator at the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (M HKA), Antwerp, to take part in the exhibition project The Geopolitics of Infrastructure. Together with artist Iswanto Hartono, the two developed the project’s artistic strategies of research, production, and presentation, with research support from Musyawarah Arsip. With contributions from Makassar-based artists and cultural workers, the project resulted in four large-scale canvas murals, four short videos, and an audio installation. These works come together as an installation titled Alhamdulillah, Our Name is GANEFO, presented at M HKA from June 12 to September 21, 2025.
KEMUNING: Pretext for a Film in Seven Chapters
Esai video berdurasi 22:59” ini adalah karya yang dikerjakan berdasarkan berbagai arsip, termasuk arsip keluarga Iswanto Hartono sendiri yang tinggal di Jalan Kemuning di Purworejo, Jawa Tengah. Konsep karya ini berangkat dari premis: bagaimana identitas dan ingatan dibentuk oleh kekuatan-kekuatan politik besar yang ada di sekitar kita dan terkadang kita tidak punya daya apa-apa untuk mengintervensinya ketika pembentukan itu terjadi. Selain arsip keluarganya, Iswanto Hartono juga memakai arsip siaran TVRI yang mengetengahkan peristiwa-peristiwa besar yang pernah terjadi Indonesia, yang sangat berpengaruh dalam perjalanan hidup keluarganya. Pada Juni 2025, karya ini dipresentasikan di De Balie, Amsterdam, suatu wahana bagi wacana dan praktik seni kontemporer dan kaitannya dengan politik. KEMUNING: Pretext for a Film in Seven Chapters
This 22-minute video essay is built from a constellation of archives, including personal family records from artist Iswanto Hartono, whose family home is in Jalan Kemuning, Purworejo, Central Java. The work departs from a central premise: how identity and memory are shaped by larger political forces—forces so vast that, when they unfold, we often have little or no power to intervene. Alongside his family archives, Hartono also draws on footage from TVRI broadcasts that captured pivotal moments in Indonesia’s history—moments that profoundly influenced his family’s trajectory.
